After eight days’ sitting, the ninth session of the 12thNational Assembly (NA) successfully concluded on March 29 and it wasagreed that the final session had proceeded in a more practical andeffective manner.

In the past four years, the NA did a lot of work with a high sense of responsibility, at a time when the entire people were engaged in implementing the Resolution of the 10th National Party Congress, for the benefit of national industrialisation and modernization in spite of numerous difficulties caused by the global economic downturn.

At their final session, NA deputies had a hot debate, received many constructive opinions, and finally reached a high consensus on major issues, such as curbing inflation and implementing key projects on hydroelectric power plants and oil refinery. They voiced voter concerns over a sharp increase in medicine prices, shortage of schools for children, environmental pollution and traffic congestion and try their best to meet people’s expectations.

NA Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong stated that the great success of the 12th NA was well reflected in the detailed reports of the NA, the State President, the Government, the Prime Minister and State agencies.

Voters were very delighted at the efforts of mass media to keep mass organizations, businesses and individuals updated on changes in policies and laws. Important discussions during the final session were broadcast live on Vietnam Television (VTV) and Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV).

However, some deputies pointed out that there remain a number of shortcomings to be addressed as ineffective inspection work, improper mechanisms for dealing with complaints and denunciations and weak coordination among NA agencies and between NA agencies and other functional bodies when it comes to deciding on important national issues.

Other deputies emphasized that it is necessary to renovate the NA’s activities and keep closer contact to voters in the future. NA Chairman Trong recalled that many valuable lessons were drawn from meetings with voters and conferences of the NA Standing Committee, the NA Ethnic Council and other related committees.

As schedule, the first session of the 13th National Assembly will convene on July 22, 2011 at the latest, with a focus on electing and approving senior personnel for important positions, as well as considering socio-economic issues, passing a number of bills and dealing with other matters of voter concern.
