The PM has agreed to establish the Steering Committee for the National Urban Development Program in the 2012-2020 period.
The Minister of Construction is in charge of heading the Steering Committee.
The Steering Committee will consist of the Deputy Head - Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Thanh Nghi and members -- Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Van Trung; Deputy Minister of Transport Truong Van Vien, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Van Tung, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Tran Anh Tuan, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Chu Pham Ngoc Hieu and Deputy Minister of Finance Pham Sy Danh.
The Steering Committee is in charge of drafting yearly and five-year plans to realize the National Urban Development Program and instruct localities to develop their own schemes and deploy them.
It is also responsible for inspecting and supervising the fulfillment of the Program every year and in a five-year period.
Under the program, Viet Nam would strive to achieve an urbanization rate of 38%, with 870 urban areas developed by 2015, and increase it to 45%, with 940 urban areas built by 2020.
Indoor living spaces would be at least 26 square meter per person by 2015, and 29 square meter by 2020./.
