On February 25 Hanoi authorities met to consider a project to build a tunnel across the Red River.

The tunnel is suggested to link Hoan Kiem district to Long Bien district. It will be built in the form of a BT (Build-Transfer) project. The tunnel will be 1.5km long, 18-20m wide, with four lanes.

The Hanoi authorities received investment proposals for the tunnel from two enterprises, the VinGroup and Truong An Company under the Ministry of Defense.

At the meeting, representatives of the Hanoi Departments of Planning and Investment, Planning and Architecture, Transportation and the Hanoi Institute for Planning and Construction agreed to the idea of building a tunnel across the Red River.

However, Hanoi Vice Chair Phi Thai Binh agreed that it is necessary to have more routes to link the two banks of the Red River. However, he asked relevant agencies to give more persuasive arguments for the construction of the tunnel and to carefully assess the capability of the investors.

The project will be submitted to the Hanoi Party Committee before it is sent to the Prime Minister for consideration.

At present, there are five bridges across the Red River in Hanoi, including Vinh Tuy, Chuong Duong, Long Bien, Thang Long and Thanh Tri. Two more bridges will be built in the future, named Nhat Tan and Tu Lien.
