Construction began on August 1 and is expected to be completed within a week, according to Sekisui, the Japanese company responsible for building the structure.
The underground reservoir will be able to hold more than 100 cubic metres of rain water, most of which will later be used to water trees and for fire-fighting.
The reservoir will be constructed from propylene cross-wave modules, a type of plastic material used for underground rainwater storage and recharge systems, according to Sekisui, adding that its staggered structure provides outstanding structural stability and security.
According to HCMC’s flood control centre, the reservoir will also supplement the underground water to help prevent sinking in the surrounding area.
HCMC Deputy Chairman Tran Vinh Tuyen said that if this reservoir proves to be effective, the model will be replicated across the city.
Building flood control lakes are one of many measures that HCMC is undertaking to tackle flooding during the 2016-2020 period, with construction starting soon on Go Dua, Khanh Hoi and Bau Cat with a total cost of nearly VND1 trillion (US$44 million).
Planning experts have said that once these lakes are completed, they could help to reduce the city’s flooding by 30%.
