Accordingto the central steering committee on housing and real estate policies,in 2011, State policies will set a high priority on increasing socialhousing programs and projects.

During its meeting held on March 14, the committee said that in 2010, Government policies helped to stabilize the development of housing construction and the real estate market.

Statistics from localities show that in 2010 the program to give houses to the poor built 187,025 houses, accounting for 95% of the plan. The houses were mainly built for poor families in 62 poor districts and for Khmer families. Meanwhile, 176 buildings for students were completed and 25 more housing projects for workers were inaugurated, providing 787,500 square metres of floor space and addressing the need for accommodation of 129,000 workers in industrial zones. Some 37 housing projects for low-income people in urban areas were also carried out, providing 750,000 square metres of floor and satisfying the need for accommodation of some 64,000 people.

Initial statistics indicate that at present some 2,500 housing projects are being built across the country, mainly in Hanoi (800 projects) and Ho Chi Minh City (nearly 1,400 projects).

Speaking during the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai affirmed that the State would continue to issue preferential policies and create favourable conditions for urban housing projects, especially social housing projects that serve the need of workers and students.

It is estimated that some seven million in urban areas are in need of social houses with an area of up to 150 million square metres and an investment of VND 300-400 trillion.
