Ho Chi Minh City will work to create favourable conditions for the Hydraulic - Machine Company to apply the made-in-Vietnam technology for turning waste to electricity, in order to address the issue of waste treatment and environmental protection.

Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan made the remarks at the field work of the experimental project 'Go Cat waste-to-electricity plant' at the Go Cat solid waste treatment area in Binh Tan district, Ho Chi Minh City, on July 19.

Secretary Nhan said that the waste-to-energy technology is one of the most modern technologies to have been evaluated and certified by the ministries and authorised agencies. It requires the construction of experimental projects such as Go Cat plant before carrying out the mass production of electricity from waste, Nhan noted.

The waste-to-electricity technology is expected to treat both domestic waste (approximately 8,600 tonnes per day) and industrial waste (1,500 tonnes per day) in Ho Chi Minh City, as well as in the neighbouring provinces of Dong Nai and Binh Duong.

Nhan said that the Hydraulic - Machinery Company is allowed to continue with the pilot project until the end of August, before reporting the results to the city leaders for evaluation and decision making.

Nguyen Ky Phung, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City recommended that the company carries out the experimental projects on producing electricity from hazardous waste, household waste and landfill waste, following the success of the experimental plant on treating non-hazardous industrial waste and turning it into electricity.

The experimental Go Cat project commenced in March 2017 and began operation on April 22, 2017 by the Hydraulic - Machine Company in co-ordination with the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Environment Company.

Currently the plant, which uses made-in-Vietnam technology invented by the Hydraulic - Machine Company, is treating non-hazardous industrial waste and turning it into electricity.

According to Director of Hydraulic - Machine Company, Nguyen Gia Long, the plant has treated approximately 500 tonnes of industrial waste, producing 7MW of electricity to join the national grid.

Long noted that industrial waste is not buried or burned during the treatment process thus it doesn’t create any waste water, bad odours or smoke.

The company is developing a project to produce electricity from domestic waste with a capacity of converting 1,000 tonnes of waste into 20 MW of electricity per day.
