The drinking water filter system project was developed in Cao Van Be High School, Khanh Phu Commune and Le Van Tam High School, Lien Sang Commune, Khanh Vinh District. The project funded by Australian Water Association (AWA) totals more than VND1.1 billion, including VND810 million from the sponsor and VND360 million from the provincial reciprocal capital. It has 2 water treatment systems, each with a capacity of 10,000l of water/ day, meeting Vietnam drinking water standard.
Khanh Vinh District People’s Committee and Khanh Hoa Center for Rural Clean Water & Environmental Hygiene together with communes had conducted a survey for locations and essential works needed for the operation of the clean water system. The systems are able to meet the needs for drinking water of students, teachers and hundreds of residents in neighboring areas as well, according to Nguyen Van Dong, Chairman of Khanh Vinh District People’s Committee.
Khanh Phu Commune has a population of some 4,700. Most of the local residents used to depend on water taken from rivers, streams and drilled wells in their daily activities. Currently, there are 2 drilled wells and a water filter tank, but its operation becomes less effective due to long-term use. Therefore, the water most of the locals used is not safe and clean enough. “We hope the water filter systems will provide the access to clean water for hundreds of villagers in Giang Muong, Son Thanh and Nga 2 in Khanh Phu Commune," says Cao Van Toan, Chairman of Khanh Phu Commune People’s Committee.
The systems can provide drinking water for not only 700 students and teachers but also residents in neighboring areas. Some 1,500 people are expected to benefit from the project, adds Ngo Dinh Thai, Vice-Chairman of Lien Sang Commune People’s Committee. Mau Van Phi, Vice-Chairman of Khanh Vinh District People’s Committee says, “The AWA-funded construction is helpful to Khanh Vinh in terms of clean water supply and water resource education, contributing to raising beneficiaries’ awareness of valuable water resources.” Apart from the construction, AWA also transferred water treatment system operation techniques. Especially, the supplier offered water assessment tools to 2 schools. Besides, AWA will support and provide remote repair and maintenance service during the system operation.
Over the past years, Khanh Hoa Province has paid much concern over clean water supply. At present, over 95% of population has access to hygienic water but the clean water supply rate is still limited. In the 2016-2020 period, Khanh Hoa strives to focus on seeking techniques, technologies, measures and models on clean water supply, especially in the 2 mountainous districts of Khanh Son and Khanh Vinh. The approach will expand throughout Khanh Hoa Province after 2020 to find suitable clean water supply models, confirms Dao Cong Thien, Vice-Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee. Reportedly, Khanh Hoa has set a target of 90% of rural population with access to hygienic water till 2020 and then 100% rural population with access to hygienic clean water and the rural population with access to national standard water is expected to double the current figure of 35.5% till 2025
