Inaugurated on April 21 in the town of Thuan An, the facility belongs to the second stage of a VND2.475 trillion (US$108.9 million) project that is 85% funded by Japan and aims to improve the water environment in the province’s southern area.

The plant will treat domestic sewage collected from Lai Thieu, An Phu, Thuan Giao, Binh Hoa and Vinh Phu wards of Thuan An town and its post-treatment water will meet Vietnam’s highest standard.

Binh Duong Vice Chairman Tran Thanh Liem said the plant will help protect the province’s water environment and public health, while also contributing to the national strategy on environmental protection.

According Cao Lai Quang, Chairman of the Vietnam Water Supply and Sewerage Association, while many cities in Vietnam are facing threats of flooding due to poor drainage systems, Binh Duong has a broad vision on urban environment with the establishment of a modern and environmentally sound infrastructure system.

With that in mind, Binh Duong is investing in many sewage treatment plants in order to improve the living environment and reduce the risks of environmental pollution and diseases caused by waste water.

In 2013, the province inaugurated the first sewage treatment plant in Thu Dau Mot with a capacity to handle 17,650 cubic metres of water per day. The facility was built at a cost of nearly VND2 trillion (US$88 million), of which VND1.6 trillion was funded by Japan.
