BACKGROUND
Using a conventional roadheader to cut an accurate profile while maintaining proper shaft alignment is usually an imprecise operation, relying heavily on the skills and experience of the machine operator. Addionally, template techniques often entail use of multiple reference lasers, beam diverting prisms and subsequent cut sheets. Frequent profile wriggle surveys are required. Variations in the accuracy of the profile cut require re-mining of tight spots or overuse of liner concrete in overcut areas. Consequently, operating expenses are difficult to control.
