Vietnam - Switzerland: Urban development cooperation

The signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in sustainable urban development in Vietnam took place between the Department of Urban Development and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO (Switzerland) (SECO) on June 21st.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Construction Le Quang Hung highly appreciated the support and cooperation of SECO with the Ministry of Construction over the years. From 2008 up to now, Vietnam has been a priority country to receive in SECO's cooperation strategy.

SECO's development cooperation strategy in Vietnam for the period 2017-2020 has concretized under three goals, including promoting sustainable urban development, adapting to climate change, focusing on the urban development planning and management. SECO has supported Vietnam to perform well in a number of projects.

Head of the Development Cooperation Agency, Embassy of Switzerland in Vietnam, Mr. Werner Gruber said that Vietnam and Switzerland have had a good relationship over the years and have many cooperation in urban sustainable development in Vietnam.

The MOU is an opportunity to strengthen the cooperation between the two sides. The Ministry of Construction will play an important role in working with other ministries to ensure the smooth coordination and achievement of cooperation goals.

At the ceremony, in the presence of Deputy Minister of Construction Le Quang Hung, Director of Urban Development Department Tran Quoc Thai and Head of Development Cooperation Agency, Embassy of Switzerland in Vietnam Mr. Werner Gruber signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between SECO and the Ministry of Construction on cooperation in building the Vietnam - Switzerland urban development program technical assistance project, ODA non-refundable aid (period 2021- 2024 of SECO with Vietnam).

The Switzerland Development Program Project in Vietnam will contribute to the good implementation of the Politburo's Resolution 06-NQ/TW, the National Urban Development Strategy and the Prime Minister's Decision 438/QD-TTg Prime Minister.

The project will support authorities to address major urban challenges, focusing on the ability to respond to urban climate change in a more systematic and sustainable manner.
