The Ministry of Construction coordinated with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to open the Vietnam Green Building Week 2020 on December 9th, in Hanoi with the presence of Deputy Minister Le Quang Hung, UNDP Viet Nam Deputy Resident Representative Sitara Syed; representatives of departments and agencies under the Ministry of Construction; business community; domestic and international experts.

Deputy Minister said the Vietnam Green Building Week 2020 highlighted construction sector’s effort in using energy economically and efficiently, contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating the impacts of climate change, towards sustainable development of Vietnam.
Over the past years, the Government of Vietnam has strongly demonstrated its commitment to international climate change combat when participating in the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement (COP21). These commitments have been realizing by Vietnam in many policies and strategies, including the National Green Growth Strategy (approved by the Prime Minister in Decision 1393 / QD-TTg dated September 25, 2012); The National Program on economical and efficient use of energy for the period 2019 - 2030; Resolution No.55-NQ/TW dated February 11, 2020 of the Politburo on Vietnam's National Energy Development Strategy Orientation to 2030, with a Vision to 2045; Resolution No.140/NQ-CP dated October 2, 2020 promulgating the Government's Action Program to implement Resolution No. 55-NQ/TW.

According to Deputy Minister Le Quang Hung, currently Vietnamese enterprises have had many changes in their vision and strategic directions when developing projects, providing projects with many green elements and using energy efficiently. UNDP’s projects on the application of technical solutions to reduce energy consumption in new and renovated buildings showed the energy saving potential from 26-67%, with increased costs of only 0 - 3% of the total investment/ works and the maximum payback period is 5 years.
According to the statistics of the Vietnam Green Building Council, by the end of 2019, the total number of certified green buildings in Vietnam is only 70 projects, a relatively modest number compared to other countries. Deputy Minister Le Quang Hung expressed his hope that activities in Vietnam Green Building Week 2020 would continue to take place annually, contributing to raising awareness and promoting green urban development activities, green building and energy efficient buildings in Vietnam.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Sitara Syed - UNDP's Deputy Resident Representative in Vietnam said: “UNDP is very happy to cooperate with the Ministry of Construction in organizing Green Building Week 2020. Ms. Sitara Syed also emphasized the need to develop green buildings globally and in each country, including Vietnam, in order to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Vietnam is effectively implementing the green building development goals through promoting the implementation of policies, programs and projects to develop energy saving efficiency buildings and organizing the annual Green Building Week”.

According to Ms. Sitara Syed, in order to successfully implement national policies, guidelines and strategies on green growth, Vietnam needs to give priority in development of energy efficient projects, green elements, green materials, towards green buildings. Green buildings should be widely disseminated in the future.
The whole opening ceremony
Within the framework of Vietnam Green Building Week 2020, in addition to the four seminars, there were also many other activities such visiting green buildings; policy talks; exhibition of new works, materials, equipment, and technologies of many domestic and foreign enterprises serving the transformation of the Vietnamese construction market towards a green, environmentally friendly, energy-efficient. This would be an opportunity for experts and managers to discuss, propose and recommend mechanisms, policies, and introduce effective technical and technological solutions in promoting green urban development and energy efficient buildings in Vietnam.
