Ministry of Construction and the Central Economic Committee co-hosted the ASEAN Smart City Summit & Expo 2020 with the theme “Smart City – community, identity and sustainable development oriented for a cohesive and proactive ASEAN” on October 22nd

There were Politburo Member, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc; Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Head of Central Economic Committee Nguyen Van Binh; Member of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Construction Pham Hong Ha; leaders of Government Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Information and Communication; Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, The bank of Viet Nam, Public Security, ASEAN Secretariat, leaders of the People's Committees of cities at the Summit.

Speaking at the opening forum, Head of the Central Economic Committee Nguyen Van Binh said, currently urbanization process and digital transformation have been happening rapidly around the world. It is estimated that up to 55% of the global population are living in cities, and about 70% of the global population will choose to live in cities by 2050. Cities generate 80% GDP but are also responsible for 70% of the worlds’ carbon dioxide (CO2).  The industrial revolution 4.0 is taking place and has drastically changed the face of the cities.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc evaluated the ASEAN Smart City Summit & Expo 2020 was an important opportunity for member countries and cities to exchange experiences and practices in comprehensive development of smart cities, while promoting external partnerships to accelerate smart urbanization effectively, towards the goals of competitive economy, sustainable environment and high quality of life. Vietnam identifies building smart cities as one of the three core tasks in the digital transformation process, and promulgates a policy to develop a sustainable smart city to 2025 and a vision to 2030.

The Prime Minister thanked the senior leaders of the member states, the Secretary-General of ASEAN, the ASEAN Secretariat, regulators, representatives of member cities, partners, experts and friends for contribute cooperation initiatives and ideas for the development of the ASEAN Smart City Network in particular and the entire ASEAN in general, and hoped that ASEAN members to enhance their solidarity, well implement  the five priorities of the ASEAN Year 2020 - strengthening a peaceful environment, connecting prosperity, developing the ASEAN community and identity, promoting international partnerships and promoting ASEAN institutional capacity.

At the main reporting session, Minister Pham Hong Ha emphasized the role and importance of the urban area, the process of urbanization and urban development, especially in the development trend and the strong influence from Industrial Revolution 4.0. Urbanization and urban development have brought about great achievements to many countries around the world, including the ASEAN region. Smart orientation in the process of building and developing urban areas will contribute to improve socio-economic efficiency, accelerate economic restructuring, improve labor productivity and improve the lives of people and contribute to protecting ecological environment.

Participating in the online speech at the Forum, Mr. Lim Jock Hoi - ASEAN Secretary General recommended: Countries in the region need to invest in digital infrastructure so that ASEAN has a strong technological foundation for Smart cities.

Minister Pham Hong Ha thanked the leaders of the Party, the Government, ministries, branches, localities, international guests for attending and said that the contents were mentioned and discussed in the Summit and specialized seminars be practical and useful for development of smart cities in Vietnam.

From results of the Summit associated with promoting the implementation of Resolution 52 of the Politburo, with the responsibility of being the leading agency in the implementation of the task of guiding, urging and controlling, investigating and monitoring the implementation of Resolution 52, the Central Economic Committee will synthesize all the opinions for reporting the Politburo, the Secretariat of key issues need to be addressed in order to develop smart cities in Vietnam, closely linked with the smart urban systems of ASEAN countries.
