Hanoi begins construction of urban railway line No. 5, Van Cao - Hoa Lac

On December 19th, Ha Noi officially broke ground on Metro Line 5, a major urban railway project linking Van Cao, Ngoc Khanh, Lang and Hoa Lac, with a total investment of over 72 trillion VND.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Dong, Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee spoke at the ceremony.

Addressing the event, Mr. Nguyen Trong Dong, Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee, said that the commencement of the urban railway line No. 5 and the simultaneous implementation of 8 other key investment projects of the Capital City is a practical activity to celebrate the 79th anniversary of the National Resistance Day and the 14th National Congress of the Party.

The event was held simultaneously nationwide at 79 sites, witnessing the inauguration and groundbreaking of 233 key national projects and works. This is vivid evidence of the vibrant emulation spirit and strong political determination of the entire Party, the entire people, and the entire armed forces in realizing the development goal of “benefiting the nation, benefiting the people, and benefiting generations, Dong emphasized.

According to the Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Municipal Party Committee, Urban Railway Line No. 5 is a strategic infrastructure project of great significance to the orientation of urban spatial development and sustainable traffic  of the Capital. The line has been designated as a key connection between Ba Đình, the political and administrative heart of Hà Nội, and Hòa Lạc satellite city.

Delegates performed the groundbreaking ceremony for Hanoi’s Urban Railway Project, Line No. 5, Van Cao - Ngoc Khanh - Lang - Hoa Lac.

Urban Railway Line No. 5 has a total length of approximately 39.58 km and is built with double-track standards, a 1,435 mm gauge, and fully electricified standards. The line comprises 20 stations (6 underground stations, 13 at-grade stations, and 1 elevated station), including 8 interchange stations, along with 2 depots located in Son Đong and Hoa Lac. 

The line starts at the intersection of Van Cao Street and Hoang Hoa Tham Street, running underground beneath Van Cao, Lieu Giai, Nguyen Chi Thanh, and Tran Duy Hung streets. After passing the National Convention Center, the line transitions to at-grade alignment along the median strip between Thang Long Boulevard and the Hoa Lac - Hoa Binh Expressway, and terminates at Station S20 located in Hoa Lac and Yen Xuan communes. The project has been designed with provisions for a future extension to the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism (in Yen Bai commune), and for connection with the inter-regional Hanoi - Phu Tho railway when demand arises.

The line passes through the following wards: Tay Ho, Ngoc Ha, Giang Vo, Lang, Yen Hoa, Tu Liem, Dai Mo, Tay Mo, and Xuan Phuong; and the following communes: Son Dong, Duong Hoa, An Khanh, Quoc Oai, Kieu Phu, Tay Phuong, Ha Bang, Yen Xuan, and Hoa Lac, all within Hanoi.

The project has a total investment of VND 72.3 trillion and will be implemented using a combination of state budget funds and capital mobilized by the EPC general contractor. The EPC consortium is led by Pacific Construction Group Co., Ltd., with member companies including Shenzhen Construction Materials Trading Group Co., Ltd.; Shenzhen Urban Planning, Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd.; Shenzhen Metro International Investment Consulting Co., Ltd.; Truong Son Construction Corporation; and Vietnam Railways Corporation.

The general contractor has committed to technology transfer and human resource training for the Vietnamese side, enabling it to gradually take ownership of management, operation, exploitation, and maintenance activities.

According to the design, trains on Line No. 5 will comprise six Type-B cars, with a maximum operating speed of 120 km/h. The line will employ CBTC signaling technology and fully automatic operation (GoA4), using a 1,500V DC traction power system with an overhead contact system (OCS) and rail-based return current, ensuring safety, environmental friendliness, and alignment with modern urban transport development trends.

The projected carrying capacity is approximately 19,892 passengers per hour in the initial phase (by 2033); increasing to 28,456 passengers per hour in the short term (by 2040), and 38,286 passengers per hour in the long term (by 2055). Upon completion, the line will effectively connect and provide interchanges with other urban railway lines, helping to ease urban traffic congestion, improve infrastructure, as well as meet the travel for the public.

According to the plan, by 2045, with a vision to 2065, Hanoi will have 15 urban railway lines with a total length of 617km. This route is expected to create a driving force for comprehensive development of the western region, as well as meet the growing travel demand of residents.
