According to Deputy Minister Nguyen Tuong Van, in planning, construction investment and sustainable urban development, investment in construction and development of drainage and wastewater treatment infrastructure plays a very important role. In this field, Vietnam is facing enormous challenges. Currently, Vietnam has 980 water supply plants, total capacity of about 12.6 million m3/day and 82 centralized wastewater treatment plants with total design capacity of about 1.47 million m3/day; service provision rate reaches 96% with water supply standard of 120 liters/person/day. So, water industry needs to institutionalize state management in the field of water supply and drainage through laws such as the Law on Water Supply and Drainage, Review and adjust the water supply development orientation and drainage development orientation in accordance with the new requirements of the period; ensure to safely  water supply and drainage; regulate relationships in providing water supply and drainage services, managing water supply and drainage services...

Many governments and international organizations have been cooperating and supporting Vietnam in water supply and wastewater treatment activities. Many programs and projects on technical assistance and investment in construction of water supply and drainage and wastewater treatment projects have been implementing across the country.

Organizing international events to discuss and share issues of concern to all parties; introduce advanced technologies and products; draw experience from implemented projects for the sustainable development of the water industry is essential and has significant impacts on the development of the regional water industry in general and Vietnam's water sector in particular.
