Sponsored by the Ministry of Construction, the Embassy of the United Kingdom to Vietnam and the Embassy of the Netherlands to Vietnam, on May 19th, CIC Consulting and Technology Joint Stock Company cooperated with Carbon Re Company and STX Group Company held a seminar " Industrial (cement and steel) decarbonisation solutions in Vietnam”. Representatives of leaders of the Ministry of Construction; representatives of the Embassy of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands; domestic and international experts, businesses operating in the field of construction, building materials, consulting and design attended the seminar.

Mr. Vu Ngoc Anh - Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Environment (Ministry of Construction) spoke at the seminar.

Speaking to open the seminar, Mr. Vu Ngoc Anh - Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Environment (Ministry of Construction) said that the construction industry contributes to national greenhouse gas emissions from two sources: industrial industry (production of building materials, mainly the production of cement generated in clinker firing) and the process of using fossil fuel energy for production and commercial activities and operations.

Cement and steel production use a lot of energy and fossil fuels, which are direct sources of emissions. In addition, there are indirect emissions (emissions from the process of using grid electricity for production and commercial activities).

According to Mr. Vu Ngoc Anh, over the past time, the Ministry of Construction has carried out an inventory of greenhouse gases for the priority building materials. Greenhouse gas emissions of construction materials production in 2015 were 63 million tons of CO2 equivalent, increasing to 87 million tons of CO2 equivalent in 2020. In which, cement production accounted for 70% of total emissions in the production of building materials in 2015 and increasing to 75% in 2020. The steel industry is also an energy-intensive industry. The Vietnamese government has identified the steel and cement industries as priority sectors to participate in the emission quota exchange system. These are two important sectors that need to implement national decarbonisation solutions.

Director Vu Ngoc Anh emphasized the significance of the seminar for cement and steel production enterprises in order to  implement the legal provisions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, towards implementing Vietnam's commitment at COP 26 to net zero emissions by 2050.

Delegates attended the seminar.

Speaking at the seminar, Counselor Ambassador on Climate Change, UK Embassy to Vietnam Mark George highly appreciated the implementation of international commitments of the Vietnamese Government, including efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in general, in the cement and steel industry in Vietnam in particular. Vietnam has a plan to regulate the domestic carbon market by 2025 that helps businesses effectively reduce carbon emissions and increases compatibility with international carbon pricing mechanisms. This will help to boost Vietnam's exports to major markets such as the EU and the US by helping Vietnamese products avoid emissions-based import taxes. Vietnam will benefit from the “greening” of production in these specific industries.

Speaking at the seminar, Dutch Deputy Ambassador Christoph Prommersberger also emphasized that cement production is one of the highest emission industries, accounting for 7% of global CO2 emissions. Reaching net zero emissions by 2050 will require rapid decarbonisation of the building materials industry.

According to the Deputy Ambassador, the Netherlands wishes to share knowledge and experiences with Vietnam and further strengthen cooperation relations in creating new opportunities. The seminar will be a platform to jointly identify the next cooperation opportunities between the Governments and businesses of the parties towards greener and more efficient construction.

The whole seminar

At the seminar, experts presented many presentations on technological solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the cement and steel industry in Vietnam; Action plan of the Ministry of Construction to respond to climate change; introduced solutions from Carbon RE (UK) and Strive by STX (Netherlands)...
