Boosting the regional linkages is driving force to develop Mekong River Delta

Can Tho (August 21th ,2015)- The Southwest Steering Committee collaborated with the Ministry of Planning and Investmentto organize a Seminar ofeconomic and social development for key economic areas of Mekong River Delta (MRD) during 2016-2020, orientation to 2030. Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh, member of the Party Central Committee, Chairman ofthe Southwest Steering Committee attended and directed the Seminar.

On behalf of the Ministry of Construction, Deputy Minister Do Duc Duy had a speech emphasizing role of planning and urban development in Mekong River Delta.

At the Seminar, presentations of Ministries and Departments stated the strengths, potentials and achievements gained in socio-economic development of the Mekong River Delta; specified the restrictions, inadequacies and offered opinions, specific solutions based on the development orientation of the region’s role and position in order to promote its socio-economy.

During period 2016-2020, Mekong River Delta intends to achieve the average economic growth of 10.5% / year; $4,400 of GDP per capital; $10.3 billion of export value. Regarding to Industry, MRD will focus on developing the industry processing agricultural, forestry and fisheries products with the orientation to further enhance export; regarding to power industry and energy, focus on developing biomass power...

Making a presentation at the Seminar, Deputy Minister Do Duc Duy confirmed urban development was the method and driving force to develop socio-economy and restructure the labor force and the socio-economy in each local, area and region. Therefore, socio-economic development for the MRD key economic region, including Can Tho city, Ca Mau, An Giang and Kien Giang provinces, needs to be considered in the context of connecting the whole region with the urban system as the driving force for mutual development.

Emphasizing the need for improving the quality of planning and urban development, according to Deputy Minister Do Duc Duy, on the basis of the approved master plan, each municipal in the region needed to clearly determine its development direction in comparision with the regional and provincial planning, then design long, medium and short term urban development programs with specific projects which would be prioritized for investment.

Deputy Minister Do Duc Duy also said that: In the next time, the Ministry of Construction would focus on researching and organizing seminars consulting domestic and foreign experts to finish the MRD Adjusted Construction Planning to meet the requirements of management and development in the new period; continually promote and support local provinces to access to the Central Government and ODA funding to implement technical and social infrastructure projects; and closely coordinate with local authorities to review and adjust the construction plans, strictly control the process of urban development, implement national and regional programs and projects on urban development, technical infrastructure, carry out the key housing development programs.
