On January 14, the seminar on sharing experiences “Integrated management of solid waste, world trends and applicability in Vietnam” was held in Hanoi. The seminar was organized by Ministry of Construction and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The seminar attracted many experts in the field of solid waste management.

At the seminar, the situation of solid waste management was overviewed. In particular, measures to strengthen the capacity of the integrated management of solid waste and the key to classify solid waste in Vietnam were focused on classifying waste at source.

In order to manage solid waste in a sustainable way, according to experts, there should be extensive in stages as separation, transport, processing separation, recovery and disposal as an integrated way, with focus on maximizing the efficiency of natural resources and not to cause environmental pollution. However, at the present, there are very few cities in Asia to successfully manage the disposal of solid waste. The settlements of these issues in the developing countries seem as the difficult task.

Sharing experiences on integrated management of solid waste, Mr. Hideki Wada - The chief of expert union of solid waste project in Vietnam has discussed the characteristics of the system of integrated management of solid waste in Japan and the points can be applied in Vietnam.

Mr. Yoshifumi Fujiin - Advisor for solid waste project in Vietnam has common opinion, waste preparation at source with low cost and is a good measure to reduce waste to landfill and promote to recycle. However, according to the survey result in August 2014, sampling waste in some wards in Hanoi showed that it had only 16% of households classified waste, the remainders classified, but not be thoroughly and also confusion between organic waste and inorganic waste. Therefore, the issue of waste separation at source should be clearly understood the nature of the wastes to classify and can reuse its wastes for other activities.

The waste separation at source is highly feasible when it is applied in Vietnam. Even though it is implemented at the initial step rather difficult, the measures for specific implementation, clear objectives for the integrated management of solid waste should be set up and plan for waste disposal areas, raise awareness of people in the classification of waste at source, identify the need of use, it will bring high efficiency. Each country has structure and effective management model if they are combined with appropriate technology. The effective management of waste source not only ensures the unpolluted environment, but also ensures no loss of natural resources as well as the health of the community.
