At least 60% of communes to meet new rural standards in 2020

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has just signed the 2020 Working Programme of the Steering Committee for the National Target Programme on New Rural Construction for the 2016-2020 period.

Accordingly, Vietnam expects to have 60% of its rural communes qualify as new rural areas by the end of 2020. There are at least 15 more district-level units qualified as new rural areas compared to 2019.

At the same time, the programme also aims improve the effectiveness of the implementation of the One Commune - One Product (OCOP) programme, with about 2,400 products qualified for standards of the OCOP.

As of the end of May, the number of communes meeting the criteria of a new rural area stands at 5,177, accounting for 58.2% of the total number of communes, the smallest official administrative unit in Vietnam.

126 districts and towns among the total of 664 across 45 provinces and centrally-governed cities have been recognised as having completed the new rural building programme, with nine having all of their communes meeting the criteria.
