Technical Infrastructure Agency under the MoC in cooperating with the East – West Meeting Organization held the International Consultation workshop on fecal sludge management and treatment in Vietnam. There were representatives of ministries, central branches, and localities, national and international experts from Bill Melinda Gates Foundation, World Bank, Japan International Cooperation Organization (JICA), Bremen International Research and Development Organization (BORDA) at the workshop.

According to Ms. Mai Thi Lien Huong, by April 2019, Vietnam had about 820 cities, the urbanization rate reached 38.6%, the average urbanization rate of 1% per year caused great pressure on the urban technical infrastructure system, in which the management and treatment of fecal sludge from the drainage system, the sanitation facilities have been challenges for Vietnamese cities. The problem was also cared by the Government, Ministries, branches and localities: The Prime Minister’s Decision No.589/QD-TTg dated April 6, 2016 on approving the adjustment of Vietnam urban and industrial park drainage development orientations to 2025, with a vision to 2050 aimed to research and select technologies in treating waste water and sludge in accordance with the characteristics of climatic, geographical and hydrogeology of areas and load capacity of receiving sources; propose regulations on reuse of wastewater and fecal sludge after treatment to ensure environmental standards and technical regulations. Decision No. 491/QD-TTg dated May 7, 2018 by the Prime Minister approving the adjustment of the National Strategy on Solid Waste Integrated Management to 2025, with a vision to 2050 set specific objectives: 100% of septic sludge collected from urban areas will be treated to ensure the environment ...

At the workshop, experts from Technical Infrastructure Agency, National University of Civil Engineering and international organizations has also round table discussion on the management of sludge from drainage system, septic sludge in Vietnam; Japan experience and other countries in the world; a pilot project on septic tank sludge management in Ben Tre city with the support of the East – West Meeting Organization and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Assoc. Mai thi Liên Huong thanked experts for the information in the workshop and wished international donors would continue to support and coordinate with the Technical Infrastructure Agency in developing mechanisms and policies on Vietnam's sludge management, implementing piloting projects in localities, contributing to help Vietnam’s cities in solving environmental challenges and developing sustainability.
