Renovations to the polluted Xuyen Tam Canal in Ho Chi Minh City are scheduled to begin next August, according to the Management Board of the city’s Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Unit - the project investor.

Dredging and clean-up of Xuyen Tam Canal expected to cost $391 million.

Capital for the task is estimated at VND9.6 trillion ($391 million).

The 9-km canal runs through the city’s Binh Thanh and Go Vap districts.

The project will dredge and clean up the canal and build a wastewater collection and drainage system, a new road on each side with parks and green areas, and technical infrastructure.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2028.

Xuyen Tam Canal has been polluted for many years due to the illegal discharge of untreated domestic waste and wastewater from households living along both sides of the canal. That has caused blocked water flows that pollute the environment and cause flooding.
