Construction of North - South high-speed railway to kick-off by 2030

According to the government’s Action Program under Resolution No.178/NQ-CP, issued on October 31, to implement the Politburo’s Conclusion No. 49-KL-TW, dated February 28, on orientations for developing the country’s railway network by 2030 with a vision to 2045, construction of the North - South high-speed railway is to get underway by 2030 and be completed by 2045.

1,545-km railway expected to be put into operation by 2045.

Investment in the project will be approved by 2025 and the construction of two sections - Hanoi to Vinh (281 km) and Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang (370 km) - will start first.

The North-South high-speed railway will stretch 1,545 km and have a speed limit of about 320 kph, with total investment capital estimated at some $58.71 billion.

Under the Action Program, a host of new or upgraded railway lines linking Hanoi - Hai Phong, Hanoi - Lai Cai, Hanoi - Lang Son, and Vung Ang (Ha Tinh province) - Tan Ap - Mu Gia (Quang Binh province) in Vietnam’s north; and Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho, Thu Thiem (Ho Chi Minh City) - Long Thanh (Dong Nai province), and Bien Hoa (Dong Nai province) - Vung Tau (Ba Ria-Vung Tau province) in the south, will be kicked off by 2030, while the Yen Vien (Hanoi) - Pha Lai - Ha Long - Cai Lan (Quang Ninh province) link will be completed by the same year.

Under the Action Program, 50 per cent of the total length of projected urban metro lines in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are to be put into operation by 2030, and totally completed by 2035.
