Second Consultation Workshop for Draft Technical Guidelines on Urban Bicycle Paths/Infrastructure Design in Vietnam

The Department of Technical Infrastructure (Ministry of Construction) and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) co-organized the second consultation workshop for the draft Technical Guidelines on Urban Bicycle Paths/Infrastructure Design in Vietnam on October 21st. The first consultation workshop was organized by The Department of Technical Infrastructure (Ministry of Construction) and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) in June, 2021.



Ms. Dang Anh Thu - Deputy Director of the Department of Technical Infrastructure (Ministry of Construction) had a speech to conclude the workshop.

Experts from relevant state management agencies such as the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry of Transport, the National Traffic Safety Committee; Department of Construction, Department of Transport of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, DakLak...; universities, institutes and research centers, consulting organizations; international organizations HB, WRI, TUMI/ITDP, JICA, WB attended the workshop. Ms Dang Anh Thu - Deputy Director of Technical Infrastructure Department (Ministry of Construction) chaired the workshop.

Research on the draft Technical Guidelines on Urban Bicycle Paths/Infrastructure Design in Vietnam is carried out to provide a scientific basis for supplementing and completing the regulations on infrastructure for bicycles in the Vietnam's current technical standards and promote urban people to use bicycles.

Ms. Dang Anh Thu said that after the first consultation workshop, the project's consulting group received many important contributions from experts attending the workshop. On the basis of those comments, the project's consulting group has researched, supplemented and completed the draft Technical Guidelines on Urban Bicycle Paths/Infrastructure Design in Vietnam for presentation at this workshop.



The whole workshop

At the workshop, Mr. Lennart Nout - International Strategy Director (Mobycon) (online from the Europe) presented about the Netherlands' experience in designing bicycle paths. The presentation covered policies, road network planning, specialized road design as well as basic principles for bicycle safety in the Netherlands.

Mr. Vu Hoai Nam - representative of GIZ's domestic consultant group presented the main contents, supplemented and revised the Draft after the first consultation. Specifically, the Draft has adjusted chapter titles; the bike paths classification; added geometric design parameters for popular bicycle infrastructure in Vietnam; adjusted and added safety recommendations for bicycle infrastructure; supplemented sample designs through images in terrain conditions in Vietnam; guidelines for evaluating the effectiveness of using and maintenance; summarized recommendations from the GIZ pilot project.

The consulting group of the project has received many comments on the draft content from experienced domestic and international experts. The comments basically appreciated the quality of the content of the draft.

To conclude the workshop, Ms Dang Anh Thu thanked experts, the German Development Cooperation Organization (GIZ), the Sustainable Cities Program of the World Resources Institute and the NGO Government of HealthBridge Vietnam for supporting the implementation of project as well as supporting during the development of urban infrastructure in Vietnam.

Ms. Dang Anh Thu asked the consulting group to fully absorb the opinions of experts and continually complete the Draft. Ms. Dang Anh Thu also said that opinions of experts at the workshop would help the Technical Infrastructure Department to propose to the Ministry's leaders in supplementing and perfecting the system of urban transport infrastructure standards, meeting current practical needs.
