The northern province of Quang Ninh launched construction of an 18-kilometre coastal highway connecting the two cities of Ha Long and Cam Pha on August 22.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the Ha Long-Cam Pha coastal highway.

The route runs from Tran Quoc Nghien Street in the provincial capital city of Ha Long to Port Km6 in Cam Pha, with four lanes, allowing a maximum speed of 60 kilometres per hour.

Construction costs are estimated at VND1.3 trillion (US$55.9 million), funded by the provincial budget.

Along its length, the Ha Long-Cam Pha Highway will be connected with the Ha Long-Van Don Expressway, National Highway 18 and local roads to create a network linking different areas of Quang Ninh province.

Such a road network is expected to boost socio-economic development, improve access in times of natural disasters and strengthen national security.

The Ha Long-Cam Pha Highway is also designed to reduce the traffic pressure on National Highway 18 and enhance Quang Ninh’s infrastructure as the province seeks to become an international tourism centre.

The project is scheduled for completion in 2020.
