More than 6,000 households living in landslide-prone areas in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap need to be relocated, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Vo Thanh Ngoan has stated.

A landslide along the Tien River

According to the official, there are 85 active erosion sites along the Tien and Hau rivers.

Last year, 49 landslides destroyed 28.5km of land in the province and caused economic losses in excess of 40 billion VND (1.7 million USD). In the first four months of 2019, one person was killed due to a landslide along the Tien River’s bank in Hong Ngu town.

To date, the province has helped 343 households living in erosion sites to move to safer areas.

Ngoan said the provincial People’s Committee has asked local authorities to warn locals in landslide-prone areas and take measures to deal with landslides to ensure safety of local residents.

They were also requested to help households living in at-risk areas to be relocated.
