On January 30, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended a ceremony to announce his decision to officially recognise Tran Yen as a new-style rural district. Tran Yen is the first new-style rural district of Yen Bai province and the North-western mountainous region.

Implementing the national target programme on new-style rural area building, Tran Yen district has gained a facelift as it upgraded all its roads linking communes and hamlets paved with asphalt or concrete, as well as improving the living conditions of local people.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Prime Minister reviewed some key features of the results of the new-style building programme throughout the country, with 54.7% of communes and 113 districts meeting new rural standards.

The Government leader urged Yen Bai to continue to uphold their obtained achievements as well as take synchronous measures to further promote the building of new-style rural areas.

The national target programme on new-style rural area building, initiated by the Government in 2010, sets criteria on different aspects with the aim of upgrading rural regions of Vietnam. The list of criteria includes the development of infrastructure, the improvement of production capacity, environmental protection, and the promotion of cultural values.
